What is a microspectrometer?

Different substances absorb, reflect or emit light in different ways. A spectrometer is an optical instrument for measuring the change in light intensity relative to its wavelength after it has interacted with a sample. it works like this: a lamp emits light which passes through a sample. The sample absorbs some of the light and the rest passes through. In the spectrometer, a diffraction grating disperses the light from the sample by wavelength and the spectrum formed is observed with a detector. Such analysis (spectroscopy) is used to analyze the composition of unknown materials in many different fields. Spectroscopy can also be used to match compounds, measure concentrations and determine physical structures.

The microspectrometer combines the capabilities of a spectrometer with those of a microscope. The microscope acts to magnify the image of the specimen for the spectrometer and allows the spectroscopist to analyze extremely small samples. Microspectrometers are also flexible. In addition to measuring the light absorbed by the sample, a microspectrometer can also measure the amount of light reflected by a sample or even the light emitted when a sample fluoresces.


Why use a microspectrometer?

Microspectrometers are widely used in analytical laboratories to identify and quantitate any number of microscopic substances. This can range from the analysis of components of cells by a biologist, diagnosis of cancer by a doctor, matching fibres by a forensic chemist, the measurement of coal by a geologist and the determination of the color of ink by a process chemist. All these measurements can be made with a microspectrometer with minimal sample preparation and no sample damage.

Microspectrometers have numerous advantages over conventional spectrometers. For instance, they can easily take spectra of samples as small as 2.5 microns across while viewing the sample directly. The latter feature allows for more precise measurements of the sample...not the surrounding material. Also, because more substances -even colorless ones- absorb in the UV than in the visible and IR regions, UV microspectrometers are very useful for analysis of compounds in any field.
